'Sleepy Hollow: "Pilot" (Episode 1.01)' TV Review

Sleepy Hollow, the once beloved horror film about a headless horseman chasing after Johnny Depp has now become a Fox TV Series, and despite being a little skeptical about watching it, I gave it a try and so far I have not regretted it (bare in mind, the season has just started).

Horror has gone into the age of Television, the genre is starting to grow within the small screen like never before, it's shows like The Walking Dead, American Horror Story and even Hannibal that are cementing a successful root for the genre into the world of Television, and with Friday the 13th rumors and the Scream announcement the genre is only getting bigger. So whatever genius decided sticking a few headless killers, a time travelling warrior and an unconventional leading lady onto the small screen based of a famous and loved story should be rewarded hugely for their courage, as Sleepy Hollow is pure brilliance.

Not typically what you would expect on tele, but not exactly 'original', Sleepy Hollow can safely glide alongside shows like The Vampire Diaries, Hannibal and even The Game of Thrones as 'So bizarre it's good'. Fans of Fox should easily eat this up as a lovely after dinner treat, and after their daily dose of Breaking Bad, they should let loose and let the headless horsemen take over their screens, slicing and dicing what ever comes in their way; and although it may not be a 'chill' type of show, it's undeniably enjoyable with it's fresh mix of humor and scares.

After Ichabod Crane "dies" during a mission for General George Washington in 1781, he awakens in 2013 Sleepy Hollow, New York. But so does the Headless Horseman, whose head Ichabod chopped off before his perceived death. The horseman begins his nightly killing spree, and Ichabod must partner with Lt Abbie Mills. Believe me, when I read this synopsis and watched the first 15 minutes, all that could go through my mind was "What? Huh? Eh?" I mean I judged it like the cover of a book, but as soon as things started rolling (*cough* heads *cough*) it proved to be a really fascinating, fun and scary head-chopping affair with wit, intelligence and a strong sense of horror.

It may not be as powerful as The Walking Dead, or as unique as American Horror Story, but it's still early days yet, and I can bet my bottom dollar that Sleepy Hollow will be one dark horse to look out for; watch it, it's well worth it.
