  2. Dear Jack Carlin,

As a young horror fan aspiring to be a screenwriter and director looking for ideas, I've been asking knowledgeable horror bloggers like yourself would be able to give me a few tips and pointers. What do you think make a good horror film? Are there certain themes that seem more pertinent to audiences today, or that you believe need to be explored more in this day and age by filmmakers? What qualities in a protagonist and/or an antagonist make for more credible characters? And lastly, out of pure curiosity: what is your favourite horror film and why? I know you're pretty busy writing reviews and that I've asked some fairly loaded questions, but I would really appreciate your reply.

Thank you, and I hope you're enjoying the holidays.

    1. Hi Sabrina. Now, my opinion on horror has changed a lot, but after watching You're Next which I would recommend, I definitely think that you have to be able to surprise the audience without the classic "he was behind the killings the whole time". I would go down the root of the character of Erin from You're Next who initially is cute and innocent, but when she is fighting for her life she instantly becomes smart, cunning and completely bad-ass! So if you were to do anything it would have to go down a root of the unexpected which can grow from a pretty simple plot or cliched genre. Have a smart opening, give time for the characters to develop then jump into the action.

Make it fun!!! there is nothing I hate more than a film especially horror that is far too serious for its own good. Perhaps look at Sorority Row (2009), its not particular good but its fun in its form. Also, check out THIS feature from Bloody Disgusting and Total Film!

  3. Hi there,

We'd appreciate any sort of feature, review, and/or interview. Please get in touch for more details. Our press release follows:

‘Founders Day’ Concept Trailer Premieres Online

Hartford, CT - MainFrame Pictures is proud to announce the release of the official concept trailer for their forthcoming feature film Founders Day. Principal photography on the trailer took place entirely in the state of Connecticut from August 14-18, 2013. Production included 18 actors, 20 crew members, and dozens of extras from across the northeast.

The trailer is viewable at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xx6CX4eP6vw
    Photos are available at: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/u8jedvcfhobky06/h8mA0wtya8

In Founders Day, the quaint, suburban town of Fairfield is shaken by the shocking murder of high school student, Melissa Thompson. The prime suspect is jailed, and the residents look to the town's bicentennial celebration to provide a sense of strength and normalcy. When more bodies turn up, however, the citizens of Fairfield grow increasingly suspicious of one another. With no clear motive, everyone is a suspect.

Founders Day is written, directed and produced by Erik C. Bloomquist, a Connecticut-based actor and filmmaker. His recent film Midnight Brew, starring Kyle Edward Cranston and Greta Quezada, recently played the Trinity Film Festival and took home the Screener’s Choice Award. Another project, Laundry Night, will soon enter its third year on international television on ShortsHD TV.

Bloomquist and his team expect to shoot Founders Day in Connecticut in Autumn 2014 and release the film in Autumn 2015.

  5. Hi Jack!

My name is Will Connor and I'm the music coordinator for Dread Falls Theatre, a goth/horror theatre company in London. I wanted to make sure you knew we have a big Lovecraft based show coming up this Aug. It's a multidisciplinary immersive show drawn from Lovecraft's stories of Innsmouth and cult worship, called Father Dagon. The audience will be surrounded by the performers, which includes physical theatre, spoken word, live music, visual art, and some secret monster surprises.

We've also got a fundraiser on Indiegogo to gather funds for the cost of the venue. All the info for the show, including trailers, gallery, descriptions and more is on the campaign page here: http://www.indiegogo.com/at/fatherdagon

Let us know if you'd like interviews or to have us post backlinks to your page in exchange for announcements for the show. We're open to whatever!

And great to see Mizfit tha Menace posting here! He's a genius! Great Gothic Horror-core rap! (and no, he didn't pay me to say that... :) )

Thanks Jack! Keep up the great work with your website! Cheers!
Take care and get in touch!

  6. Hello!

Have you ever heard of THE ELF ON THE SHELF? It's an enormously popular children's book that comes with a little elf doll. The book tells the story of how the elf was sent by Santa to watch over the children until Christmas. The parent is supposed to sneak into their child's room every night and move the elf to a different spot, so that the children will think the doll flew back to the North Pole and reported to Santa.

As a writer with a healthy interest in the macabre, my first thought upon hearing of this was that had I received THE ELF ON THE SHELF as a child, I would have buried that damn thing in the backyard. Naturally, a story was born of this. That story is called SANTA'S LITTLE HELPER, and it is a horror novel scheduled to release on 10/31/14, wherever ebooks are sold. I would like to offer you an ecopy for review, as the book is not yet in print. If you wouldn't want to review, but would allow me to do a guest post, interview, or the sort, that would be great too.

Here is the synopsis for SANTA'S LITTLE HELPER, so you can see if you're interested.

    SYNOPSIS:
He shows up in a white box, with a bright red book under his arm... He wears a jolly grin and hat, a suit with gold bells and green yarn... He watches you for Santa, or so his red book claims... But though his grin is jolly, he's not here for fun and games...

The children have been chosen, such precious little souls they are... And may the Gods be with them, if they wish to make it very far... For Santa's Little Helper does not say, but knows important things... He knows when you've been bad or good, and what monsters stalk your dreams... He knows when you are sleeping, he knows when you're awake...He's picking out his presents...He's got some souls to take.

    Thank you for your consideration,
    Heather
